Way to read-protect (name/password) the blog?

  • I was wondering if there was a way to read-protect the blog, including the first page? I’d like to have the students in my school run a blog, but the administration might not want the site to be globally visible.

  • You might be able to do this through server settings, such as password protecting the folder wp is installed in – are you planning on off-siting this, that is running it on a host NOT your school district’s server?

    It will be on the host where the school’s website is, but we use a hosting service.

    Talk to your IT department then. They should be able to pass-protect the folder in which wp lives, with some method for each class maybe to have its own password combined with each student’s username.

    You need to coordinate this sort of security through the IT department….

    I probably didn’t make myself clear. I AM the IT department, but the website is on an external hosting service. I guess I’d need to download some kind of ASP or PHP Password Protection script and run it, but was looking for recommendations. I kinda hoped this was built into WordPress, but I guess that’s only for posting/commenting, I guess.

    Ah. Yeah, I didn’t get that at all….

    Do you have some sort of cPanel interactivity on the hosting server you’re using? If so, there’s a built-in folder-passwording protection available. I don’t believe it’s “built-in” to wordpress, however.
