Wassup Crashing Multisite Server

I installed Wassup running on a 8,000 member multisite install. Perhaps half of the sites are actually “active”, and only a fraction of those are actually being used on even a daily basis.
But it singlehandedly drags the server to a near-halt.
Within a few minutes of my activating network tracking in the Wassup settings, pages start loading visibly more slowly. Soon, most page load requests time out entirely. Occasionally they’ll still load, but after a long wait, sometimes as much as a minute or two.
The instant I network deactivate the plugin (which I have to leave a special tab open to do, because it can take forever to navigate to the correct page when Wassup is killing the server), it gets better again.
Do you have any idea what could cause that?
