I have a GravityForm running on my site and when users attempt to access the page where the form is located and some users are reporting an error Warning: inet_pton():Unrecognised address in /nfs/c07/h01/******/domains/**********.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/vendor/wordfence/wf-waf/src/lib/utils.php on line 27 when they try to access the page with the the form.

I have checked my server and IPv6 Support is enable (checked this as per another post on this forum suggested). My hosting is with Mt and I’ve never had any issues with Wordfence before and it only seems to be affecting some users and not all. I have also tried setting the firewall to Delay IP and Country blocking until after WordPress and plugins have loaded (only process firewall rules early).

Very Confusing and I can’t figure out why. Can anyone help.

Wordfence ver: 6.3.14 and all other plugins are up to date.

  • Hi kennyboy7,
This issue might be limited to users with IPv6, to let me double check that, could you please send the exact page URL with this form to “alaa [at] wordfence [dot] com”?

    Thanks.

I am also seeing this error, and yes it’s only happening for users with IPv6.
This is being reported more and more now as IPv6 is being used more and more for new connections.

    Hi Wfalaa,

I’ve sent you an email with the form address for you to have a look.

    Hi @bikuta and @kennyboy7
So, we came to a conclusion now that this issue only happens when users visit your websites with IPv6 address, there is a possibility that your servers aren’t configured properly to handle IPv6 requests, to let me check that, please go to (Wordfence > Tools => Diagnostics) and click on “Send Report by Email” button at the top of the page, you can send the report to “alaa [at] wordfence [dot] com”, make sure to include your forum username, I will take a look at this report and let you know my findings.

    Thanks.

@wfalaa I have sent the report, thanks for looking into this!

    Hi wfalaa,

As requested I’ve sent the diagnostic report from my site. Thanks so much for looking into this issue.

I can see you both are using Cloudflare, so please check if you have “IPv6 Compatibility” option enabled in Cloudflare, if so, then try to disable it temporarily and wait for an hour or something then re-check this issue.

Let me know how it goes,
    Thanks.

    @wfalaa You’re a legend!
After turning off IPv6 Compatibility in Cloudflare it seems to be working.

Would be good if you could provide some more details as to why the IPv6 Compatibility setting in Cloudflare is causing it to break because that setting is recommended by Cloudflare to be turned on.

I understand why it might be recommended to keep this option turned on, but the benefit you get from this option is really limited (at least for now), because a lot of visitors’ ISPs don’t even support IPv6 yet and even if some of them do, I haven’t heard of any of them discontinued IPv4 support till now, so if I were you I would deactivate this option for now.

However, if you want to debug this issue in more details you should start with your hosting provider telling them all the details and they should be able to check the conflict between your server configuration and this option in Cloudflare.

    Thanks.
