• Hi there,

I started having Warnings such as these, after updating to WordPress 5.3. Does anyone know why, and how to get rid of them / fix the problem if needed ?

    * Warning: touch(): Utime failed: Operation not permitted in wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 479
    * Warning: chmod(): Operation not permitted in wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 168

    Thanks !
    Jonathan

  • Same here. Seeing hundreds of these warnings a day since the 5.3 upgrade. Running WordPress on a Google Cloud Instance.
chmod(): Operation not permitted in /opt/bitnami/apps/wordpress/htdocs/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php

I don’t know if this can help anyone, but all my warnings disappeared after I asked our host Cloudways to reset the ownership of our server’s files to the application & updated permissions accordingly (I don’t have any further details than this, sorry). But it was definitely related to file ownership & permissions.

I know the cause of the problem — WordPress is trying repeatedly to change the permissions on files that WordPress doesn’t own. I want to know WHY the new version of WordPress keeps trying to change permissions on files it does not own, and which files it’s trying to change.

    [SOLVED] (at least for me)

Me too on Cloudways and Digital Ocean.

Just restart the server and error is gone.

    Hope it helps,
    Bye!
