• Hello all,

I am trying to help my music teacher update her website and I’m having some difficulties. I’m not an expert in these matters although I managed to set up my own WordPress site and work out how to make changes.

As you can see, it’s a really old version of WordPress, but I can’t advise she update it at the moment because it would need backing up first and that’s a whole other kettle of fish…

The main change we want initially is to convert it to two-column (wider main area with one sidebar on RH side). I have done a search and tried to change the code based on older queries but it hasn’t quite worked properly. It removed the third column but knocked the remaining second column text to the bottom of the page.

An alternative that I tried, to at least empty the middle column as a first step, was to install Widget Context plugin. I flagged this to move the content out of the middle column (which I want to delete) and into the right hand column, but after saving this change it did not quite work – the content showed up in the right hand column, but stayed in the middle column too.

    The site is at: https://ginalefaux.com/blog/

Many thanks for any help you can give me!

Here’s the style.css code that I tried and failed to edit to produce a two column effect:

  • Changing a theme from a three column layout to a two column layout sounds simple, but it’s actually not that straight forward.

If you’re not that capable in CSS and php my suggestion would be to just find another theme with the layout you need and change to use that. The theme use you are currently using is pretty basic so it should be to too hard to find something.

Sorry, didn’t realise that it wasn’t allowed to post CSS text, I thought people needed that to suggest coding help…although I haven’t exactly been swamped with suggestions!

Thanks for the feedback premiumwp – that has occurred to me but I am a bit nervous about what would happen. Is it likely to carry over all the content or would it need backing up first?

The theme is like a skin, it just controls the look and presentation of the materials on your website. It doesn’t change the content of your website. You can always test and revert back to your original theme if you need to.
