• I want to renew totally a site, using a more advanced theme (the one I use is “homemade”) – but I want to keep the layout (more or less) and some pages.
When doing the work on the new site, I would like to keep the old one live, and at the same time copy and paste from it to the new one.
    Possible?

  • Hi,

I’d suggest installing a new WordPress installation and placing your new theme on that. Then use the Tools menu to export your current blog content to your new one. You’re then free to test and tweak your new site until you’re happy with it. As this stage you can physically replace the old site or simply point your URL to the new one.

However, how “critical” is your site? I’m doing much the same thing at the moment with my own site but I’m just going to take the old one down for a day or two to perform a clean re-installation of WordPress and transfer everything over using the aforementioned tools (and a database and file backup first, just in case I miss something!).

    Thanks David!
My problem is that I am taking over “as a dummy”, meaning that it is very little I know and understand (reading “WP for dummies”, and “WP Web design for dummies” to try to reach a minimum understanding level quick….). But I think your option one is best for me. But this leaves new questions:
    – How do I find out where our site is hosted? (I will need this to install a a new WP?

That’s a good question but not one I can really answer – a whois of your domain may give it away, if the URL is provided by the same company. Otherwise this is just something you should know – who are you paying for your hosting?
