• How do I get my non-profit’s subdomain to redirect to the domain name instead of the subdomain?

I setup an account with Bluehost and installed WordPress at onefamilyadoptions.com. I then transferred our harborlifeministries.com domain (that was parked) to point to a subdomain on the main site, and pointed it to the folder onefamilyadoptions.com/hlm. That was ok until I installed a second instance of wordpress into that folder on the server and now when the browser shows the subdomain and the folder name when the domain is typed in the address bar.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

    Doug

  • No, WP will not work with setup like that. No redirects.

Anyway, I’m not 100% sure what you intend to do. It seems that you can complete your objective by manipulating htaccess file. I believe BlueHost will let you configure redirection under Control Panel. If you use this function, the htaccess will be rewritten. Perhaps, you want to ask Google about Apache and htaccess and redirect.

    Good luck

Thanks, macsoft3. After googling those terms, it might be what I was after. Since I’m a part-time webmaster I haven’t touched the htaccess file for some years and had forgotten some of what it did.

Hopefully to clarify, if someone types ‘domain-2.com/blog/’ into their address bar, I want that to be what the address in their browser reads, even if domain-2.com really is an add-on sub-domain of ‘domain-1.com’ at the virtual address of ‘domain-2.domain-1.com’ (which happens to be in reality located within the sub-folder ‘domain-2’ on the server).

Anyway, I think you may have put me on the right track. I’ll post back when i find out for sure.

It will not work. WP “hates” any kind of redirects of that kind. You were warned…

Just to clarify this for someone that’s completely new to all of this:

If I am not using two different domains but am instead using mydomain.net and journal.mydomain.net as the subdomain – does the above answer still hold true? Sorry I don’t know whether to interpret the above as solely referring to his instance of two separate domains or as blanket statement.
