Want 'Recent Posts' widget to start after last displayed blog post

I want the list of recent posts generated by the “Recent Posts” widget to start after the last regular post that displays. So if, under Settings: Readings, the item “Blog posts show at most” is set to 4, then the “Recent Posts” widget with start with the 5th newest post instead of the most recent post, so that the current posts display on the blog page aren’t also displayed under recent posts. This seems like it would be an obvious way to have “Recent Posts” set up, so previous experience tells me I am probably missing something.

I’ve searched through plugins and tried to see if I might be able to edit some code to do this, but so far no success
