• Hi all,

I created a site locally using wamp server, and have accidentally deleted a db in phpMyAdmin when having a tidy up. I stupidly used my client/friends initials (also site name) as the db name, which happens to be wp! (wp_db).
Thinking this was just an old wordpress db not connected to any projects. There was a few months between the site completion and the request to go live, hence the mistake.

I am just wondering what my best course of action is, as I still have all the files in place in the www folder. I know without the db nothing will tie up but is there a way to at least get the site back up (displaying) and then re-populate content, saving ‘some time’? Or am I just going to have to bite the bullet and start over?

I have tried to simply create a new db with the same name, but I am getting an error establishing connection.

Thanks. Hope there’s a wizard who can help.

If you deleted the database and don’t have a backup, you’ll have to start over.

I have three words for you…. backup, backup, backup ??

I thought that was going to be the answer. ??

I can think of 3 better words to call myself ??… stupid ******* ****! Lol

    Thanks Steven.

I’ve done that before on a live site…

What I did was build a new WordPress, get it running, and then overwrite the file system with the old site’s files to at least get a start with my media, themes (especially any child theme) and plugins.

I mention it as I did that once and found a database backup there from when the last couple backups ran after I bought the site back up.

I now use that trick when I can to migrate sites by building the new site on the new host then using the old database still on the old host, and then doing a backup. You’ll need to preserve the new ‘old’ wp-config.php and swap out that again after the backup and then do a restore. Takes some juggling but works well.

Sometimes you learn something unexpected from a big mistake.

Sometimes the Wayback Machine can help you find some of your content too. Of course on a site that never went live that won’t be an option. I mention that as it might help in the future.

Hopefully, you’ll find a ‘forgotten backup file’ sitting there when you do the above if you decide to try it.

Usually, I don’t weigh in on ‘WAMP’ issues unless I think I might really help. WAMP servers give me the hives!!!
