From first skimming, NF seems quite a bit involved to setup, and it is said to not be compatible with Windows. I use WAMP locally, keeping a mirror copy of LIVE (Linux; Nginx as Apache reverse proxy; CloudFlare). Is that a workable setup for NF? I don’t need any NF protection locally, obviously, just things to keep working with minimum re-configuration, if any. What would you recommend to do? Thanks.

You won’t be able to activate in on Windows. It can be installed, but will be deactivated.

Right, but it will be pre-activated (and at least partially pre-configured) when restoring the DB (or full) to WAMP from LIVE (e.g. via updraft). Are there consequences of this that may crash the local website and make it unusable? Will disable the NF plugin (the usual way, or by renaming the plugin’s folder) be enough to fix it?

I don’t think you’ll get any PHP errors or even warnings. It relies on PHP and WordPress so that should be fine.
Renaming the folder will disable it.
However, if it runs in “Full WAF” mode, i.e. loaded via a php.ini or .user.ini you will need to delete that file right after restoring from a backup because it will contain unix paths that aren’t compatible with Windows. PHP may throw an error in that case.
