• It’s been almost 2 months since the WP 2 was released but I am yet sceptical about making that move. The reason is simple. There are some plugins which I am using (like Scripty Goddess’ Paginate) which I feel might not be supported by the newer version.

In such a scenario of plugin clashes, what is it that the WP gurus would recommend. Need your help on this ??

Thanks Kafkaesqui. In short, I will have to hunt for alternatives in case the compatible plugin is not available. Which also means that I will have to forego some of my aesthetics in such a case.

No need to speculate, there’s a huge list of compatible plugins in the Codex. I only saw a few that aren’t compatible, none of the ~20 plugins that I use are reported to be a problem.

But I’m still hesitating just cuz trying to read every potential problem before I attempt the upgrade, since i might not have a lot of time to work on fixes if it messes up when I do it. I’m especially unclear about how to get my customizations in the old default theme, to appear in the new default. Am I going to need to compare the code line-by-line to see what’s changed from dirty old Kubrick?

Thanks Dgold, for that heartening news ?? That really brightened up my damp spirits ??

I am in the same boat as you’re. I am jittery about the installation going wrong and things falling apart, etc. I just do not want to take a ‘risk’ which is not warranted. Nevertheless I will have to give it a go. Let me know if we can do it together. I need tons of moral support ??

    Cheers!!

Dgold, do you mean you customized the “default” and didn’t rename it to something else?
Anyway, if I remember well, the upgrade instructions say to keep your theme folders and files.
I guess you have two options:
    – rename your theme to something else (dont’ forget the changes on the top of the stylesheet)
    – save your old theme and when finished the new install/upgrade > delete the default theme and upload yours with the same name.

Hey Moshu, any words of wisdom for me? like when should take the plunge ?? I am really nervous man… ??

Bhooshan – hold on for a few days ??

podz, does that mean the 2.0.2 update is lurking about?

    Thanks Podz ??

I seriuosly am waiting to shift to the newer version as quickly as possible but I am scared since I feel I will have to rework the entire website again. And also the incompatibility of some plugins most importantly the Paginate one which I have fallen in love with.

This thread can be a lifeline for people who are waiting to shift to WP2 and are sceptical about their success in doing so. Please keep this thread alive by offering moral help ??

You might want to create a second install on your server to test out the new version & plugins. Once you’re confident everything works you can upgrade your production site.

Podz has a good guide to installing XAMPP if you want to test using a local copy of WordPress.

Thanks Ming. I think that’s a good proposition to take ?? I already have a second installation on my local machine with XAMPP. I will try and install WP 2.

I finally bit the metaphorical bullet and upgraded last night. I did the local testing thing first, which let me see which plugins wouldn’t play nicely, and allowed me to make some changes.

As an alternative to XAMPP, you might want to try Webserver on a stick, which I found quicker to set up and use (no installation to speak of). It’s designed for putting on a USB memory stick, but works just as well from a hard drive.

And, as you might guess, Podz has the guide:

Thanks LesBessant…for that lovely update ??

Now it’s time for me to take the plunge and see how deep the water runs ??
