I keep seeing an nginx.conf file showing up in my root directory.

Looking at the contents, it appears to be generated by W3TC and doesn’t appear to contain any critical details that would compromise security.

    Is this normal W3TC behavior?

    Hello @megunticook,
Thank you for your inquiry, and I am happy to answer.

By default, W3 Total Cache writes a file named nginx.conf to the root of your WordPress install.
In Performance>General settings, Miscellaneous sub-box you can specify the path on your server that its NGINX configuration in “Nginx server configuration file path” field.
    I hope this helps.

I may not want W3TC messing with my nginx.conf; could I point it to an include file in my /etc/nginx/conf.d/ directory that would just be for W3TC to use?

    Hello
You can use “Nginx server configuration file path” field.
