    Dear support team,

I started receiving emails by WordPress 3 days ago informing me that my site is experiencing technical issues caused by W3TC. The frontend looks ok, but unfortunately, I can’t log into the admin panel anymore (not even in recovery mode).

    The error details:
An error of type E_ERROR was caused in line 452 of the file /home/……/plugins/w3-total-cache/Cache_File.php. Error message: Illegal length modifier specified ‘f’ in s[np]printf call

    WordPress version 5.4.2
Current theme: Foodie Pro Theme (version 2.1.8)
Current plugin: W3 Total Cache (version 0.14.4)
    PHP version 7.3.20

I’d highly appreciate it if you could give me some advice as to how I can move forward to recover my site (and work in the admin panel again).

Thanks a lot and best regards,
    Ramona

  • Same here today on two websites, simultaneously. I had to uninstall it!

I have the same problem as @plantydelights I can not login to my website and same error. I would like to know what to do as well. Please let me know how I am suppose to purge my cache if I am unable to login to my website admin panel.

I’m having the same problem. How can I disable the plugin without access to my dashboard?

    Hello @plantydelights @andrewsamplab @mirrorlure7m @pgcrowe

I am sorry about the issue you are all experiencing and I am happy to assist you with this.
Can you please share some more information so we can assist you with this?
    1. Have you made any changes/ updates on your server or WP before the issues started to occur?
    2. Can you please share your hosting provider?
    3. @plantydelights Have you tried updating WP to the latest 5.5?
    4. @andrewsamplab you can rename the plugin in wp-content/plugins/ and that will disable W3 Total Cache.
    5. Try completely removing W3 Total cache and re-installing (follow the instructions on this topic with a similar issue) and see if there is a specific option that might be causing this.
    Thanks!

The same problem with my website. I cannot log into the wp-admin panel.

We have the same problem on multiple websites. Only solution seems to be fully deleting all files and reinstalling.

    Hello @imagn

Thank you for the information. Can you please share some more information like when did this issue start to occur? Any specific moment or action was taken on your side that might have triggered this?
Also what version of the PHP are you running and where are you hosting the websites?
    Thanks!

I determined that the problem is with Database and Object Cache. After disabling them, everything worked.

    Hello @mrvladyslav

Thank you very much for the information. Can you please share if the caching method for OC and DB Cache was set to disk? Are you on a shared server?
    Thanks!

@vmarko I believe The first occurrence was August 27th. Nothing noticeable was done to trigger this on any site. Sites are running PHP version 7.2 and 7.3. All sites so far with this issue are hosted with InMotion Hosting with shared hosting accounts.

    Hello @imagn

    Thank you for the information.
Can you please contact us directly via the plugin in Performance>Support so we can take a closer look.
Please provide the info on which websites the issue still occurs if any and if the issue may be caused by activating OC or DB Cache.
    Thanks!

@vmarko I have already fixed the sites. Some sites had DB and/or OC enabled, some did not. There was no correlation in this aspect.

    Hello @imagn

    Thank you for the information.
I am glad to know the issue is resolved.
Please make sure to drop us a note if the issue occurs again.
    Thanks!

I also had this issue. Started around the 27th. Front end showed error message “Your site has a critical error” back end worked fine. I had to disable the plugin before my site returned to normal. I have been using the premium version of W3 Cache with Cloudflare for years without issues until recently. WP 5.5 on in motion hosting

Mine is still having problems. I’ve deleted everything I can find that’s related to W3TC but when I try to use the dashboard, I get this error

W3 Total Cache Error: some files appear to be missing or out of place. Please re-install plugin or remove /home/*****/*****/*******/wp-content/db.php. I can only access the dashboard in recovery mode and it doesn’t allow me to install plugins.
