• Hello

I’m not asking how we can add custom fields in a specific template for a given view (posts archice or post single view). This topic has already been addressed many times.

I’m asking about SEE the value of a custom field when you are creating the template, exactly the same way you do it with Elementor pro for instance.

Let’s say you have a EVENT custom type and a LOCATION custom field for this cutom post.

In the Gutenberg site editor we create a single post view for the events.

We can add csutom fields (with ACF, JetEngine blocks or other plugins) but we don’t see a sample value within the editor.

Seems Gutenberg lacks a convenient feature here : the possibility to specify which content to use for the template. If we could (as we do with Elementor) specify to use ‘event1’ (for instance) as the source, the editor could display the values of the custom fields.

    Thanks for your comments

If you’re using a custom fields plugin block, it’s the responsibility of that block to display saved values in the editor. For such blocks, I recommend asking in that block’s dedicated support channel.

It is possible to see conventional custom field values in the custom fields editor panel which appears below the editor (but not in FSE mode). This panel is often hidden, you may need to enable visibility through screen preferences. Some plugins might not save custom fields in a conventional manner, such fields will not be visible in the panel.

    Hi

It seems I didn’t make myself clear enough. Asking Crocoblocks JEtengine guys the question they simply answered Gutenberg site editor is lacking the feature.

Let me try to explain it a bit better

There is a missing feature in gutenberg here : it’s the ability, when you define a new template (archive or single view) to set which existing content you use to display the values in the editor. Again please check Elementor that did it.

    thanks

I forgot to add that without this important feature we can’t really see what we are building in the site editor which is the main purpose of the template site editor.

    thanks

The JEtengine guys are correct, Gutenberg does not currently offer such a feature “out of the box”. Such a feature is left for plugins or themes to offer. When you open the dialog to add a block, search for “meta” and some possible add-ons are suggested.

FYI: A custom field concept (as block attributes) for Gutenberg is being worked on. The issue is being tracked at the GitHub site for Project Gutenberg.

If you need such a feature in Elementor, I recommend inquiring in their dedicated support forum.

    Hello

I can understand part of the job should be done on the plugin level but even without any plugin, there is still a missing feature in the gutenberg site editor :

The fields you put in the editor could be rendered as they are in the front end with real values taken from one sample content.

Instead of just displaying ‘title’ we should see the real title of a real content. It would make the building process much more productive

    thanks

If you feel there’s something missing from Gutenberg that’s not covered by the issue I linked to previously (or other existing issues), you can raise a new feature request issue.

When you open the dialog to add a block, search for “meta” and some possible add-ons are suggested.

All I see “No results available from your installed blocks.”

Edit: silly me, I’ve just spotted the suggestions below this text.
