• Been running a website with a slightly old version of WordPress for a year now, and just started work on a second website. I installed WordPress (version 3.2.1). Everything was fine until I tried to edit a page.

In Firefox, I get no formatting buttons in Visual editor at all and any text enters doesn’t show up. I can’t get a cursor to appear in the edit box. I can enter text but it’s invisible unless I then highlight it. It’s also appearing in HTML, not visual.

I then tried Chrome and when I went into the page the formatting buttons appeared briefly but disappeared when the page finished loading.

Any ideas? Downloading IE now but I don’t really want to use it on an ongoing basis.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

I had no plugins whatsoever. I had just installed WP and deleted the two plugins that come with it. At that point I hadn’t installed any new plugins. I have since installed NextGen Gallery but the problem persists.

I switched back from 2010 Weaver (my theme) to Twenty Eleven but I still have this issue. So I changed it back to 2010 Weaver.

This problem has existed since installing WP. It’s affecting Firefox and Chrome. Visual Editor is only functioning in IE.

    ??

My other website uses 3.0.5 – don’t think I’ll be updating to 3.2.1

Have you tried – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress? Using another browser? Another computer? If it’s not plugins, your theme or the files, then it must be a server or browser issue.

It works in IE on both our computers, but doesn’t work in Firefox or Chrome on either computer.

I have 123-reg hosting which offers WordPress as an app – which just means that they do the install for you. Choose it from a hosting app list, click install, job done. :o)

I used this method for our other site (also 123-reg hosted) but didn’t have this problem.

I have Filezilla set up – can I download WordPress from somewhere as if I was going to do a manual install and just replace those two folders?

Would replacing those folders affect any website content?

That sounds like a javascript issue to me. You can download a fresh copy of WordPress via the big red Download button at the top of this page.
