    Hi,
I have seen that others are having similar problems that may or may not be related.

    The Problem

    1. Just upgraded to 3.1 through automatic upgrade on the dashboard
    2. The Visual editor GUI is missing and text appears in white. (see image)
      arcbroken1
    3. Once ‘Visual’ is clicked again text appears but in html (see image)
      arcbroken2
    4. The front end of the website is fine

    What I have tried

    • I have read a lot of similar posts here and gone through the ‘Troubleshooting WordPress 3.1 – Master List’ and tried the following without any luck so far
    • Checked other browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari)
    • Disabled and re-enabled visual editor in my profile
    • Deactivated all plugins
    • Switching to the Twenty Ten theme
    • Resetting the plugins folder by FTP (renaming folder, creating a new one and visiting admin page)
    • Disabled the Admin bar
    • Downloaded and re-uploaded a fresh copy of the wo-admin and wp-includes folders
    • Checked I am running PHP 5
    • Upgraded the php memory limit to 64MB through .htaccess, wp-config and memory-bump plugin (shared hosting no access to php.ini)
    • Tried adding the following code to wp-config
      define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false);

None of the above worked does anyone have any suggestions?

  • I’ll try the includes and admin folder replacement – though that seems very mysterious to me – especially the three time replacement

Doing this does not require reinstalling. Just deleting and ftping new files. The 3 times was most likely operator error – maybe writting over files instead of deleting – or an ftp problem. I have had files that showed up as ftp’d and then looking at file size the size was 0 or 1kb.

3 sites all on the same server all not working is definitely a sign but of what I don’t know :^) The .htaccess file is a hidden text file which gives instructions to the server. Some don’t have or need them and I can’t explain them completely. Maybe someone who understands will jump in here.

I just meant I’d have to install over again, since I reverted. Wish I could be as kindly useful to others as you have been. Thanks. We’ll see how it goes.

I run a localhost using MAMP on the laptop with a copy of mine & clients sites. ( All sites work fine without problems )It’s a good thing too. As I decided to dump the entire site in question & start from scratch. Even down to the deleting the DB & create a new one.

But before I started that, would give the one thing I hadn’t done a try as I reluctant to do it. Someone in here in another thread suggested to insert a line into the config file. That was a complete fail & only rendered the site useless & nothing more then a white page.

So with a brand spanking new DB & entire upload of WP files. Site back up & running.

I’m starting to think its a DB problem as deleting, reinstalling, certain files & folders, fresh install of wp or resetting plugins folder alone doesn’t seem to fix the problem.

So, Expressions, you simply trashed everything – after doing an XML backup? How do you start the new DB? I’m trying to remember how I started this thing in the first place. Then you re-upload the back up of your contents?

Yep trashed the lot. The longest part was uploading wp. Once that was done, rest only took a few minutes.

    Install WP
    Activated my theme
    Import the xml file
    activated the plugins
    set the 2 widgets

Log into your hosting CPanel, click on MySQL Databases, create new, set db user & deleted the old db

Thanks! Maybe after the funeral stuff is over and the grandkids are gone and I’ve slept for one full night, I’ll try this. Everything falls apart at once.

This was caused by incorrect folder permissions for me. In my server error log I received errors such as:

Softexception ... wp-includes/js/tinymce" is writeable by group

    Solution

Use FTP, CPanel, or some other means to go through ALL your WordPress folders and ALL subfolders and make sure permissions are set to 0755. Group and Other should not have write permissions.

Keep checking your error log until no more soft exceptions or any other file access issues are being received.

No idea if this will work for everyone, but hopefully a few people have the same cause as me. I compressed and uncompressed a WordPress install to migrate across servers without preserving permissions.

    Best wishes

    Paul

I just got an email follow-up for this thread – for a comment by PaulsWebSolutions that isn’t showing up here, when I click on the link. I will quote it.

I’m joining the queue for a solution, having tried everything that has been suggested both here and on other forums.
In my situation we have multiple sites, multiple hosts (sounds like a science fiction problem!) and still only two issues: visual editor loads then disappears, and we cant upload images. These problems do not occur on all sites yet all use the same theme and plugins. Ahhhhhh…..

Thanks Paul for your generous offer – I’ll let my partner know as soon as he returns to the office. He’s gone sailing – last race of the season and all that!

    Happy, happy, happy dance!!
In the process of doing a new page for one of the sites, noticed that the Capcha wasn’t showing up properly in the preview. Then actually looked at the site itself and found that none of the images were showing. Checked the permissions and bam! two of the sites have incomplete names….nothing we did but now fixed and behold the visual editor is working again.

I hope you all have some success soon ??

    @kimbaillie

I know I sound like an idiot when I ask these things – I’m just learning all this coding by myself and I get confused. Where do you find the permissions? Index header? I’m stuck now because my benighted hosting company is migrating all their sites and I can’t get to them. But I can ftp. Explain this to me, though, if you can – after trying everything, I regressed to 3.0.something, and when I did that, everything worked again. Am I correct in assuming, then, that my permissions must be fine?

    @kbarncat
No way are you an idiot – I don’t even attempt to learn the coding stuff ?? I am notorious for using the “wrong” words when referring to these things so here’s the actual task that was performed (sadly it is at the host so you might still be no better off).
In the cPanel go to Hotlinks and make sure that the correct URL for your site is listed – this was where we found that some of the URL was missing from our listed sites.
    Good luck!

Was hoping the original poster was still around? Was any resolution found to this? I’m in a similar situation and my WordPress editors are going to start screaming for the lack of the visual editor. Same problem as listed above. The visual editor tab is there, but when clicked upon, there is no menu and it shows the HTML.

I thought I did something wrong when I moved the site from one account to another (on the same host), but apparently it’s happening for others not in that situation. Really frustrating.

As an aside, I’m also having a problem with the navigation buttons on the “Pages” page in the ADMIN section. When hovered over, they reference an IP address instead of my URL. The first page loads fine, but clicking on the button eventually results in a “Page Not Found” error.

Did you download 3.1 or 3.1.1? I have walked away from the problem. Already enough anxiety in life with the middle east and constant snow. I was hoping to come back after someone had figured it out in the coding world. If you’ve downloaded 3.1.1 and still have the problem, I’m going back to sleep. I simply went back to 3.0.2 (.2 or higher, can’t remember). I have all the functionality I need there, and the loss of the editor is not made up for by the cute admin bar they coded user-side.
