• After upgrading all WP installs to 2.8, I noticed the Visual editor on some installs showed white text in the Content area, but if I waited long enough, the editor and text would finally appear…

Now I am noticing that I cannot click on any of the HTML tabs in the Visual Editor area. Is this a known issue that maybe 2.8.1 can resolve, or can I do something with my 2.8 install to get the tab to work?

Here is a preview of what I am seeing in my installs:

I have tried to disable all plugins, but that did not work.
I even tried on a fresh install with no themes or plugins… HTML tab not working.

I mostly use FireFox, but did test in IE 8 and Safari (for PC)

  • Try switching to the default theme and see if that helps. If you still have problems, one final solution is to rename the plugins folder via FTP. I’ve know of cases where “inactive” plugins have continued to cause problems.

    No luck as of yet.

When I put the default WP theme on and went to look at the PAGES area, all of the WYSIWYG editor features were completely gone, and just the HTML tab was available. But when I put back the other theme I was using, I was about to see the WYSIYYG editor, just not able to get to the HTML tab.

    It’s not a theme issue.

Have you tried renaming the plugin folder yet? If you have, try redoing the upgrade via Tools->Upgrade->Re-install automatically, then clearing the browser cache. Or delete wp-admin and wp-includes directories and upload fresh copies from a new install package.

I’m having a similar problem. I haven’t had the HTML tab disappear, but the Visual view has been blank or the same as the HTML view from time to time. The problem seems to be becoming more frequent. I haven’t tried Esmi’s solutions yet, but assuming the problem continues, I will.

Any information about the root cause of this problem?

I’ve got the same problem in 2.8.1. I’m not sure if the problem was there in 2.8.0 or not. BTW, this problem only exists when trying to edit pages. Editing posts is fine.

[update: problem solved. I deactivated the wp decoratr plugin and its working now. I suggest people having trouble go through their plugins one by one.]

Thanks esmi. I had the same problem in 2.8 and 2.8.1 Renaming the plugins folder is what fixed it for me. I tried everything (except troubleshooting my plugins one-by-one) on this blog page. And I tried the plugin that this
person recommended. It worked, but the editor has too many buttons. I put these links here in case the suggested fixes work for someone else.

    Thanks sitepoint.com for your help!

I spoke too soon! The Visual Editor is working for Admin but not for the other 2 Users (both “Editor” role). Still showing the white in text area and no toolbar. Strange….!!!! What could this be and how do I fix?

Wait…..strange but deleting the cache worked!! Now visual editor is working for users and admin.

    Rename it to what?
