    Hi,

Over night, I received an automated email from Google Webmaster Tools, informing me one of my pages had failed the updated mobile usability test (odd that it only picked on one page), which will mean the page will be penalised in search results. I have updated nothing recently:

Search Console has identified that your site is affected by 2 new Mobile Usability related issues. This means that Mobile Usability may be negatively affected in Google Search results. We encourage you to fix these issues.

Top new issues found, ordered by number of affected pages:
    Clickable elements too close together
    Content wider than screen

I think the “clickable elements” issue might be the social buttons, which do look close together. But they are automatically laid out by the theme. Can the theme authors have a look? Google provide a link to the button standards they are now using:
    https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/accessibility/accessible-styles#multi-device_responsive_design

I have no idea why it is complaining about the content being wider than the screen – it lays out just fine on my phone. Its possibly my site banner. However, I’m mostly focused on the buttons just now.

    Thanks!

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hey,
    Check out this link: https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly?id=a0GaQcu3qgGlkeEpGwN3cg

Click on the “page loading issues: view details”

There you will see that your page only partially loaded. “9 page resources couldn’t be loaded” those resources are the styles and scripts for your site and they were blocked from Google. LIkly something security on your server is blocking the google bot.

I suggest talking with your host to determine what is keeping Google from seeing your scripts and that will clean up the errors.

Hi Ben – thanks for taking a look.

“Other” error? – thanks google ??

I’m the host. ?? And there’s no reason those elements can’t load, anyone/anything should be able to load them just fine. There’s no ‘bots file. I’ll take a deeper look, but it doesn’t make sense at this stage.

I can see the banner is the problem with the width issue, as I expected.

I’ll update and report back, but I suspect google’s changes to button spacing will still be an issue once the “other” errors are taken care of.

Hi again – Refreshing the mobile friendly test page now shows the page as “Mobile Friendly”. I have changed nothing.

I think this may have been a release error on Google’s end with their Mobile Friendly testing tool, and that error has now been corrected.

I still get the “resources couldn’t load” warnings, but that is not impacting the Mobile Friendly status and I am not getting warnings about links/buttons being too close together, or things not fitting on the page. I think that is an unrelated issue.

I’m going to mark this as resolved and chalk it up to “4 hours of wild code that escaped google labs” ?? Thanks for looking at it Ben.

    Ent.
