Virtual and Downloadable Products Pending

I have several downloadable products, which work well. However, today someone ordered a virtual product with the downloadable, which caused the order to become “Pending” rather than being processed immediately. Is there a way to get these two types of products to play well together? Or, am I just missing something simple?
