• I am preparing to upgrade https://www.thelongjump.com from 2.0.3 to 2.8.4
I have copied 2 archive databases to my desktop as backup, and when looking for the current database in the config file – I see it is one of the archive databases. Hmmmm
So I uploaded it to a website running 2.8.4 and it did work – but only showed posts from archive date 2005.

How can I confirm which database is storing 2009 posts – (in order to test it on another site) – before updating my website?

  • It is easy to tell which DB has posts from 2009. Just open the file in a text editor and search for ‘2009’. Careful not to edit anything though.

It sounds like you want to run a WP 2.8.4 blog using a 2.0.3 database? That isn’t going to work. There have been very significant changes to database structure since 2.0.3. You are going to have to upgrade your WP one release at a time— 2.0.3->2.0.5->2.1->2.2 and so on– so that the database gets properly updated as well.

Caveat emptor: I have on numerous occasions skipped one or two minor updates– skipping from 2.5 to 2.6, for example. I haven’t had any trouble doing that. I have seen people on the forums recommend updating through each revisions, though, so be aware.

    Yes – thanks.
I’ve just been reading THIS so I’ll be careful.
