View Count Trigger

Hi, I’m trying understand the available triggers for counting post view logic. Your documentation seems to indicate views can only be counted on single post page load). Is that correct or do other ways exist?

For example, on a section of our site we have a Custom Post Type that does not include a single post page, but rather the user sees a popup or an external link when clicking on a post returned in the archive loop. Can your view count logic be fired by clicking on a link so we can track popular posts without visits to the single post page?
