We have a site that we have built using Avada theme. When we add the VideoPress videos, it creates the basic shortcode [videopress abcdefg] but I can’t figure out how to add the captions. We don’t have the blocks editor (worst thing to happen to wordpress since the Pharma hacks) so I don’t have the button for attaching the captions file. Is there any way to add the captions in the Media gallery or via the shortcode?

    Hi there @criticalcode,

I am afraid that with no Block Editor enabled this is not really possible: https://jetpack.com/support/jetpack-videopress/add-subtitles-to-your-videopress-videos/

It is not possible to associate a .vtt file for closed captions to a file directly in the Media Library. The?VideoPress block?must be added first. However, when you upload a track file to the video via the above steps, it gets associated with the media file itself. If you reuse the video file elsewhere, the track will be already in place

I am sorry to deliver bad news! Even though you’re not a fan of the Block editor, you may want to give it a go in a staging site to see if you can work on them, especially if the caption is must-need fetuare for your videos.

    Hope that helps!

I don’t understand why it couldn’t be made possible. The shortcode could have a captions attribute that points to a URL for a captions file that the user has uploaded to their site.

The issue I have is we are no longer hosting on WordPress’ system so we can’t take advantage of the full Videopress system.

You can still flag this to our product team’s attention by creating an enhancement request here. Bear in mind that we can’t ensure this will be taken into consideration, and if so, when it will be deployed.

You can still embed VideoPress content outside the WordPress ecosystem, but you will still miss the feature you requested in your initial post :/
