Video Block customize play button

  • I have a bunch of Video Blocks on my WordPress page (not public yet) and I have animated gifs as thumbnails. BUT the play button is smack in the middle of my thumbnails and I’d like to move it. These are plain-vanilla WordPress Media Library uploads, or direct-linked Vimeo video files, or even Vimeo player embeds, but in all three cases, the play button ruins the appearance of my nice thumbnails.

    Is there a way to customize the placement of the Play button?

    The only feasible solution I know of is in placing a separate, completely static image that looks like a player embed where the video is supposed to be. When someone clicks the image, JavaScript hides the image and exposes the actual player and starts it playing. As the play button would then be fake, you can place it anywhere you like.
