Very sleek, clean and fast, but not perfect just yet
-
I decided to get rid of the NextGen Gallery since it started to bloat up my system quite a bit.
Found FooGallery and it looked like just what I was looking for, and indeed, it almost is. This gallery is very sleek, very fast and clutter-free. It doesnt pump up the system very much and has a good bunch of options already, plus an intelligent extension system, which offers an already amazing free LightBox Variant, called FooBox (good job on this one!).
Actually I would gladly recommend this Gallery to everyone else who is looking for a clean Gallery System for their WP installation.
Here are my Pros:
- Sleek and fast
- Clean design
- Great integration into the WP Media System
- Easy to setup
- Quite a few options to modify the overall look
- Great extensions system
- The Free Lightbox (Extension) is one of the best I’ve used so far
- Hassle-Free, reliable NextGen Importer! (yay!)
Here are my Cons:
- No “Single Image” Option to insert an image from a Gallery as a single picture into a post (quite handy for news blogs)
- No modification of the default Settings. I need to setup each gallery instead of setting up default settings for all galleries
- No Batch-System to modify settings of already present galleries at once
- No extra options field for custom CSS which could come in really handy at times
- Gallery-Subpage not present?
- No Albums (YET!!)
As a gaming news network, we usually insert single images with or without captions, either covering the whole width or floating left/right. Sadly, there is no extra option within this Gallery which would be really handy to have everything sorted out nicely. Sure, we can insert the images by hand from the Media System, but AFAIK they wont get a special class by doing that (for styling) and wont add the other images from the gallery to the FooBox Popup. That would be another great addition ??
On the other Hand, I am missing a “General Settings” Tab where I can modifiy the default settings for every new Gallery thats being created. Maybe I missed it somewhere, but wasnt able to find it yet. Plus, there is no batch option to set gallery options which is kind of a real pain in the butt after importing all the NextGen Galleries ??
Since I am crazy about CSS and write alot of styles myself, I would love a dedicated custom CSS space and not alter my theme css too much.
Another thing is – On NextGen you had the option to link the images to a sub-page, where images were shown in a “Slideshow”-Kind of gallery. Sometimes that variant is requested and I was wondering if that would be possible for this Gallery as well?
Enough of the moaning already – tl;dr: This Gallery is worth a try by any means! Go get this baby! ??
