Very Simple Contact Form – translation

For the translation I’ve installed your ‘Very Simple Event List’ plugin on a localhost WP, and I have a problem with the translation:

I’ve seen that the (very important) term ‘event’ already has been translated to ‘Veranstaltung’. IMO this is not OK. ‘Event’ is also known and understood in German. ‘Veranstaltung’ sounds … silly, at least.

In order to continue coherently I have to know if you want to stay with the term ‘Veranstaltung’ or not.

Oh dear, I scrolled through the already translated parts, and … ehm.

There is a side box on the edit screen with the title ‘Veranstaltungsinformationen’ [‘event infos’ probably]. Further down I read:

Datum der Veranstaltung
Uhrzeit der Veranstaltung
Veranstaltungsort
Veranstaltungs URL
Veranstaltungs URL Etikett

Apart from the fact that the latter two are orthographically incorrect, why is the term ‘Veranstaltung’ [event] repeated all the way down?! It’s already in the title, isn’t it?

Just write:

Datum
Uhrzeit
Ort
URL
Schlagwort (Tag)

Alright, I finished the remaining strings.

As mentioned above I don’t know what you are going to do with the clumsy translation “Veranstaltung”. I didn’t use that term, instead I used “Event”. If you decide to stay with the term “Veranstaltung” you have to tell me, and I will adopt my translations accordingly.

But, sincerely, “Veranstaltung” is silly.

About Very Simple Event List, the present translation was a combination of strings I got from another user and Google translate. If ‘veranstaltung’ sounds silly in this context, I will change it to ‘event’ in all related strings.

You forgot 1 string:
Do not remove events and settings when uninstalling plugin.

I also notice you added multiple translations for the same string. You can remove the incorrect one by entering it and press ‘Reject’.

It’s not necessarily wrong but I have two problems with this translation:

1) It sounds a bit like a “forced translation”, as if to avoid anglicisms at any cost. “Event” is easily understood by anybody born after 1945. IMHO.

2) The semantics are different. “Veranstaltung” is a subset of “Event”: A “Veranstaltung” is always made, planned and organized by men. An open air concert is a “Veranstaltung” and/or an “Event”. But an “Event” (in German as in English) can be more: A total lunar eclipse is an “Event”, but it never is a “Veranstaltung”(!)

Yeah, sorry for that. I’m a bit anal with this but it hurts me personally when I have to use a poorly translated plugin.

In case it helps: I have a degree in German linguistics, and – above all and still – I’m a linguist at heart. So rest assured, I won’t tell you BS. Most of the times.

I hope you are familiar with German grammar. But in this case it’s not difficult:
Plural: [die/diese] Events
Genitive: [des/dieses] Events
Genitive, plural: [der/dieser] Events
let me know if you need more…

For coupling words in German you always have to use either a hyphen or to merge the words. For example, an “Event calendar“ in German would be either a “Event-Kalender” or a “Eventkalender”. (In this case the first one is better.) But never a *“Event Kalender”.

I have no use for your events plugin but I do have use for your contact form plugin. And I’m glad that people like you are spending their time to code such useful and well-working plugins. So I’m happy to contribute something useful.

I guess I should use your extensive knowledge of the German language to help me improve the German translation of the events plugin. I already translated ‘veranstaltung’ into ‘event’, but have used preposition ‘der’.

Green strings: already approved (but you can change them)
Yellow strings: need to get approved
Red strings: fuzzy / incorrect (need to be checked)

You can also delete (= reject) a translated string if it’s not correct or if there are double strings. Always refresh the page after you’ve deleted a string.
