Very low website speed test score.

    I am a novice user. I would like to ask for your help.

    I have started to build my new website, using Astra Starter Templates (Life Coach theme) and Elementor page builder.
    Now that the homepage is almost done, I’ve run some speed tests on the site.
    I’ve used about 4 different ones. The results were surprising. It was pretty bad.
    The first time I run it on Google’s PageSpeed Insights, the score was 16.
    Sites rank between 50 and 70 on average. My site has barely any content. (I guess)
    The site suggested to eliminate render-blocking resources.
    After a quick google search, i installed two recommended plugins (Autoptimize and Async JavaScript ) to speed things up. (I’d love to remove those two plugins if possible. I try to keep everything minimal.)
    Ran a 2nd. test… the score was 20. ??
    I’ve enabled lazy loading of images in Jetpack. Reduced the image sizes to a minimum.

    Could you tell me what’s going on and how it could be remedied?

  • I would suggest to install a page cache plugin thetachap (assuming you don’t have page caching), e.g. “key cdn cache enabler” or “wp super cache” which work great alongside Autoptimize. When using AO the only reason to use AsyncJS would be if you have a significant amount of 3rd party JS to async/ defer, if that’s not the case limit it to AO + a page cache.

    Thanks for the reply @optimizingmatters,

    I’ve had wp super cache installed, but I uninstalled it because my host provider said that they provide a better service + I’ve connected my site to Cloudflare.
    Any other suggestions? Any idea of why the score could be so low?
    I just have this idea that a newborn Astra site should, or would be lightning fast.

    There are various factors, which could hinder the speed of the website while building with the Astra theme or any other theme.

    As we checked on page testing tool, we noticed the speed of 36 – 44 on Google PageSpeed Insights, while on WebPageTest the results were pretty good, might be due to server location!

    The issues found on Google’s PageSpeed, and not many on WebPageTest.
