• This is an excellent alternative to existing solutions and very useful with split archives in some cases.

    My initial remarks:
    – didn’t find any option to exclude directories/files
    – no compression level for archives to choose from
    – split archive sizes not correct: I tested with setting to compress files every 10MB but got some packets of 15MB
    – downloading split archives one by one can be annoying for large backups; would be nice to have a “select all” option before downloading split archives.

    (didn’t test migration yet)

Thanks for your feedback and nice review. We glad to know that you like it.
The feature of excluding specific folders/files is in our schedule and it will be added in future release.
Actually, there are two compression type for archiving backups: Only archiving without compressing for shared hosting and compressing and archiving for VPS/dedicated hosting.
In regard of splitting archive size, if the size of all files is less than or equal to 10M, they would be compressed as 10M. On the contrary, if one of files is larger than 10M, it won’t be split to multiple compressed files.
In addition, it is a nice suggestion to add a ‘select all’ option when downloading split archives.

    Well noted, thanks.
RE compression levels: yes you have only 2 options, with/without compression but some backup plugins allow to adjust the level of compression when using the “with” option.
Not very important anyhow, just an idea. Doesn’t need to be very precise, just something like, low, medium, high compression.

    Sorry about the tardy reply.
It is a good idea. We may consider to add the further option for compression in future release. Thanks for your suggestion.

I personally think the ability to choose the compression level wouldn’t be too useful for a plugin like this. If we are talking about compressing images that are to be visible in their compressed form to others, then the ability to choose a compression level makes sense but for a plugin that’s supposed to compress files in a lossless way that can be decompressed to the exact original files, just an on/off switch for compression makes more sense. I’m curious as to what could be the use cases where one would actually need different compression levels in a backup plugin like this.

@hqraja the compression level of a backup directly affects resource limits of servers, in particular those of shared accounts. Other than that, it defines the backup’s size, which also can affect shared accounts.

@dsl225 Makes sense…thanks for explaining. I hadn’t considered the resource usage bit, and if that’s not a concern, then the highest level of compression seems to be the only option needed, but I understand that resource usage can be a major concern on cheap shared hosting.
