Version stuck on 5.4.2

Whenever there’s an update available, WordPress prompts you to update and the process is straight forward, you click “Please update now” and click “Update” button. WordPress automatically downloads the latest version and get it installed.

However, if you’re not seeing the update prompt for latest WordPress you can directly navigate to {your_site_url}/wp-admin/update-core.php

If you are having trouble updating the WordPress to the latest version, feel free to add more context into this topic by adding what exact issues you are facing.

Take a look at Tools > Site Health. Do you see any abnormalities there?

I notice that a cron parameter is automatically appended when the page is called. This is unusual and to me indicates a problem with the hosting. This should be detectable via Site Health.

You can follow the Manual Update guide to update WordPress manually. Before that, ensure you take a backup of your entire site in case something breaks.

OK, checked Site Health. It says “a plugin has prevented updates by disabling wp_version_check()” Can you point me towards a likely culprit or do I need to turn them all off? Many thanks

There are many plugins that do this. See if one has “hide” in its name. Otherwise, you need to look at the descriptions of the plugins – it should be clear which one does this. If not, you’ll have to disable them one by one until you find the culprit.

Couple of years ago, we did a WP update which made all photos disappear. So I found a plugin to regress one version (5.4.2), which worked. I had forgotten all about it. Thanks ??
