I’ve spent four and a half years working on?this plugin and I’ve recently decided that I can’t keep doing it for free. I think the plugin is unique in its power and flexibility. I would like to earn some money in exchange for all the time I’ve put into it and will put into it in the future.

Today I’m releasing version 4.5 for free as usual. It’s a substantial upgrade that includes a number of new features. I will release minor updates to fix all the bugs I’m sure you’ll find, but this will be the last major?release that is completely free of charge.

I plan to keep a free version of the plugin in the plugin repository, but version 5.0 will likely remove a number of advanced features and make them available as paid add-ons. I haven’t made any decisions on the specific features or what their prices will be, but I think that anything taking advantage of FFMPEG or LIBAV will be a premium feature. Most of the basic features related to embedding and playing videos will remain free. There will be new advanced features as well. I think adding an advertising overlay module will make sense once I start charging. I’m also considering remote encoding options using?ssh2_exec for dedicated servers or accessing 3rd party services like Encoding.com.

I’ve been very active in supporting the plugin on this forum and GitHub, and I’ll continue to support the free version, but I can’t keep up the speed and level of support for free. I will offer support for all premium features as well as paid premium?support for the free version.

This will not happen overnight. I’m just one person. I frequently have full-time jobs that keep me away from development?for months at a time. I have a lot of work to do in order to create the infrastructure for premium add-ons and I figure if I’m charging for it I should clean up the code. I’m a?much better programmer now than I was in 2011 and there’s a lot of leftover junk from my early work.?For those of you who use the advanced features and are morally opposed to paying for things, version 4.5 will still be there for you. Nobody will force you to upgrade and I’m not going to delete the old versions.

I resisted this move for a long time, but I can’t rely on donations anymore. I have a PayPal donate button on the settings page and a donate link?on the plugin repository. As of?July 7, 2015, the plugin has been downloaded 278,964 times. There are 30,000+ active installs, and approximately 20,000 of them are?running the current?release. Out of all those users, over 4.5 years, 44 heroes have voluntarily donated money, totaling approximately $1000. That includes one very generous user who donated $250 and another who donated $100. Most of the 44 heroes gave $10. Those of you who gave large amounts will be remembered when the free version comes out.

I look forward to hearing your constructive?feedback about this plan.

  • Kyle,

As a user of your plugin, and one of the $10 donors, I fully support your decision and I’m looking forward to purchase the paid version.

I imagine that you’re probably targeting semi-professional bloggers and small companies, I just hope that there will be a pricing tier for hobbyist users like me.

Thanks for the donation! I hear where you’re coming from. I’ve looked at other plugin pricing structures and they’re all over the map. I don’t think it makes sense to go from $0 to $250. I’ll figure out a way to keep it reasonable.

I haven’t actually used your plugin yet, although I have it installed. But do really like it and plan on using it in the future, the pagination was a BIG deal to me so thanks. I support you in your decision.

Your plugin is awesome. I really hope I’ll be able to get it within my budget for my wordpress network. I’ll start saving for that now.

Your plugin is a must-have for me. ??

I will always happy pay to use this plugin

you did a great job with the plugin, you deserve to be paid.
but please make it affordable for everyone ??

    Hi Kyle,

I support your decision as I am sick of great plugins that die because authors could not afford to work on them. I wish more authors would do what you are about to. This way, we can be sure that we can rely on your work for the months, hopefully years to come.

    Good luck,
    Pavel.

    Hi

As a corporate users I would like to buy (= to get a receipt with tax info and not just PayPal info).

And I find it hard to change the amount from $10 to what ever…

I could easily pay $99 to get support and more functions…

    Hi Kyle,

Would gladly pay for the plug-in OR support! Just installed your plug-in, and very glad I did, as it’s the only way I’ve been able to get my markers chapters to work, so thank you!

I am very much a newbie, so apologies for simplistic questions, however I am having a few issues. First, I have a large black space around my Poster image, which is 1920 x 1080, so does not make sense. Black space goes away once the video starts, thank goodness. I am also wondering how I can remove the large gray area at the bottom with the thumbnail. Is the thumb supposed to be the “gallery area”? Confused about this.
    Example here: https://ronchapplestock.com/rcs/Wordpress-examples/Template.jpg

Not sure if this is why I am having the black area around my poster, but I get this warning in settings. No clue how to fix or if it is affecting anything: https://ronchapplestock.com/rcs/Wordpress-examples/Warning.jpg

    Thank you in advance!

Sara, please post a new topic in this forum asking your question again. And include a link to a page where you’re having this problem. It’s really hard to troubleshoot screenshots.

Hi Kyle, Unfortunately the video is on a site I cannot publicly publish. May I send you a private message with the link? Sara

Hi Kyle, I’ve moved my page to a site I can post, so here ’tis: https://www.aerialinspection.com/sara-tests/

By using a fresh site, I have managed to get rid of the gray bar at the bottom (still not sure what that was supposed to be – gallery??) but still having issue with the black bar. However, how it is not just the poster / thumbnail (as before), but the entire movie. My original vid I’m linking to (embed via URL) is 1920 x 1080, and I want the vid to be 900 x 506 on the site. Have tried multiple variations on settings, and still can’t get my vid to be 900 x 506.

    Thanks for any suggestions, Sara

I think most people would be able to pay $10. More than that would be a problem.

    around 70$ – 100$ is the best ??

    Kyle,

You have a baby to think about and everyone deserves to get paid! I am unfamiliar with Da Rules of WordPress, but I have often wondered why premium plugins are not offered for a 30 day trial like so many other software applications.

There are many issues with WP plugins and consumers paying for them – a huge factor being if the plugin will meet the needs of the customer as it is very difficult to determine before the install and final design. Another is the ubiquitous horror stories about customers paying and not getting support, or a refund, ending in a non-functioning plugin and cash out of pocket. Some plugin authors put up a “premium” plugin full of promises that don’t deliver and skip out of dodge. I think these are the reasons why people are hesitant to spend a lot of money at the outset.

As you set up your premium offerings, consider a trial period…if it is practical and able to be done. If this is not feasible programmatically, then it would be best to really think through an automated reimbursement process. If people pay and the final product doesn’t work for some reason, they need their money back quickly to pay for the next attempt.

Good luck!! I look forward to seeing what you do in the future!
