Verification failed. We couldn’t find the verification meta tag.

  • When I try to verify my website with Google it gives me the error “Verification failed. We couldn’t find the verification meta tag. ” I successfully verified it once before and then got a soft 404 error message. Since then it will not let me verify the site. I have tried about 3 or 4 different methods and continue to get the error message. Has anybody encountered this problem?

    If you changed or added the verification, it may be that it’s not in the cached version available to Google, so clear any and all caches and then try to verify again.

    Please note that Google cannot verify your site if you are still logged in to it during the verification process. If you are still logged in you will get the message you described. You need to paste the code into the site, save your settings, and then log out. After logging out, go back to Google Search Console and click the “Verify” button.
