    Hi!

I’ve just opened up my webshop and I’m experiencing some trouble with the VAT. My price across the website is set to include the VAT in the price, but the order summary does not mention the portion of the VAT and it seems to be missing from it.

Price is set 10 euros at checkout, with VAT showing, but in the screenshot here you can see the price before discount is 8,26. What is going wrong? Are the orders not showing VAT collection at all? Is Woocommerce holding the VAT portion of the tax on their end? And how can I see it?

My region is Netherlands but the order was based in Spain, which might explain why the 21% tax isn’t showing, but the tax breakdown does appear during checkout if I try and replicate the order with that same discount, so I am not sure what’s going wrong.

    Please help me! Thank you.

Hello @lesia can you go to your Tax settings and take a screenshot there of those please?

    Please see the settings attached!

As you can see for the Standard tax rate, I had only one rate that was NL-specific during that order. I think I have to remove that country code, but I left it up for now so that we can examine.

When I have NL in the country code, the price at checkout when using a Spain address seemed to also show 10 euros with tax included, so I’m a bit confused.

Hey there, @lesia! Thanks for contacting us. I’m happy to help you.

    Thanks for all the information!

I see on your screenshots that you only have taxes set up for the Netherlands and that the tax is set for the shipping address, so if the shipping address of the customer was Spain, it shouldn’t show the tax.

When you tried to replicate it, did you use the same address for the shipping?

    Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks for your response! Yes, that also was the case in the settings during the order went through. So doesn’t that mean that the price should just be the full 10 euros without having any tax deductions in the order summary?

As those tax tariffs are still current on the website, I went and replicated it again with the exact same address, and that’s what the checkout looks like when I enter the details. Clearly, the subtotal is correct and is full price, but you can see there is VAT applied to the order anyway.

So what happened to this VAT? And why isn’t the full price on the order the 10 euros a piece anymore?

    here is the screen: https://ibb.co/8K72m8H

Thanks very much for your time!

    Hey, @lesia!

When you set the prices to be added with the tax it calculates that the price you added, in this case 10, is regular product price + taxes. So it would be:
    – Price of the product → 8,26
    – Taxes → 1,74 (since you set the taxes to 21%)
It will calculate this based on your store location.

So, if the taxes are set to the customer’s shipping address and they add an address that does not have a tax set up, the system will understand it is tax free and remove the tax from the price. That’s why it was 8,26.

I just checked your website (I’m not in Netherlands) and even without adding any address it shows me the price without taxes (8,26).

So it seems your website has geolocation configured and it is calculating the taxes based on it. Since you are in the Netherlands, you see the price with the taxes even when you add a different address.

Can you please go to WooCommerce > Settings > General and check the Default Customer Location option? Is it set to geolocation?

    Looking forward to your reply.

Hi! I see, that would explain what happened perfectly, as geolocate was indeed enabled. I have now changed the tax to apply to all countries. I see there is an option to default customer location by shop country/region, could you tell me how that would work?

There is no way to determine the location only after a shipping address was filled, correct?

    Thank you!

    Hello Lesia,

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand that you have now updated tax settings to be applied to all the countries.

There is an option to calculate tax based on the Shop base address.
If this option is enabled, the taxes are always calculated based on your store’s location regardless of the customer’s address.

For a better understanding of tax settings, I recommend that you read this documentation.
This explains all the settings available for tax.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us again if you have more questions or concerns.
We are here to help ??

    Best regards.
