This is my first post here, and I apologize in advance if this is something that has already been addressed. My skills at searching the contents of this forum are apparently lacking, but I will strive to constantly improve.

But my question is this: how can I make something into a variable product that I was told needed to be a grouped product?

I sell books, and I sell them three ways: hard-copy, PDF and two-fer (both hard-copy and PDF at a reduced price). My developer told me I had to do this using the grouped product with all three variations hidden but referenced when a customer chose to buy something.

It works well, but I added the Customer Review plug-in, and when people review a product, the review only appears on the hidden product page. So my future customers are seeing no reviews and no stars.

This is a real drag, and I cannot figure out how to offer both a tangible product and a virtual and downloadable product under a single Variable Product.

Please help! Thank you in advance for any helpful suggestions you may have to offer, especially if you have experienced this very thing.

P.S. the page I linked to is one of 41 or 42 book choices that need to be updated.

@misterbebop Information regarding variable products can be found here:
    https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/variable-product/

What I would recommend is creating a global attribute that you can apply to products that need it. This can be named “Media”, or what you choose. The options can be: Hard Copy, PDF, Hard Copy and PDF. You then apply this attribute to a variable product, and then create variations from all attributes. You set the prices as needed and for the PDF you would set that variation as Virtual and also Downloadable, and link the PDF. For the Hard Copy and PDF variation, you set it as Downloadable and link the PDF to that variation, as well.

This would allow the PDF to be downloaded with both versions needed.

Thanks, Jesse . . . I’m headed out of town for a week and will be back next Sunday, but I suspect I might need a little more guidance at that time.

You said a global attribute . . . would that apply to all products or each one individually? Out of the 41 books we sell, five of them are digital download only and I can envision those not being a huge challenge, but would I need to make 36 global attributes to apply to those other books? That part I’m not clear about. The formula for the price of hard-copy + PDF is the price of the hard-copy plus 25% (or 125% of the hard-copy price).

I did look at the link you posted (I had attempted to get through that previously) and your information added to that ought to help get me started, so I appreciate your help.

I hope you’re around after Sunday 7/8. Thanks so much!

@misterbebop If you create a global attribute, you can choose what products it is applied to. Global attributes are great if you are going to be applying them to multiple products, such as like Small, Medium and Large for tshirts, so you do not have to create them over and over again.

You do not need to select all of the options when applying the attribute to a product, nor does the attribute need to be added to every product.

If I am not around, someone will be ??

I have not had the time to go back and look at this yet . . . am juggling several projects and have about a dozen things going on at the moment. I will look at this again in the next few days (maybe by Sunday for sure) and will let you know when it is *resolved* . . . it’s still looking to me like I’m going to have to make 41 or 42 global attributes from what I can glean above. I’m not selling shirts in three sizes.

This is not resolved. I think I need to hire somebody else to fix my website. I am not happy with the way my developer threw everything in my lap and left the most hair-pulling parts of putting this website together for me to figure out. This is a nightmare. I am not a tech guy–I’m a trumpet player, and I’m about to totally lose my religion over this.

Kinda reminds me of “Dammit, Jim, I’m a doctor, not a web developer!”

    Hi @misterbebop,

We recommend one of the services listed on this page who can assist with any custom development work:

    https://woocommerce.com/customizations/

It’s best to work with one of the recommended options so you are not left in the dark later on. Hopefully, this gets you going in the right direction to get the job done!

I’ll mark this as resolved and you are welcome to open a new thread if any new issues arise.

    Thanks!
