• My upgrading to the latest version (2.8.4 from 2.3.x) finally seems to be in order after learning about and implementing a few things I did not previously know. Still, while my site validated okay in 2.3 it does not in 2.8, with errors about “role” not being an allowed attribute (default theme). I know that validation is hardly perfect, so is this something I can reasonably ignore or will there be potential problems in certains browsers, situations, et cetera? And if so, what if any steps could/should I take to diminish any potential problems, conflicts, and/or inconsistencies as much as possible? Thank you in advance for any replies. It is appreciated.

Impossible to say without seeing the site. You can look for yourself though:

    Make your site valid.

Circular, i know, but thats the solution.

The fact is that VERY FEW valid sites look like crap in any modern browser
