Validation – Big picture

  • i have a little time to work on validation. there are issues i don’t understand. here is the first issue. the next issue(s) will come when i solve this one…

    1) the validator says for example = line 6 < /br> fatal error. i open the respective file with my file editors and don’t see the problem. however, when i put the url/path on the browser, check the source, sure enough it’s there.

    why can’t i see the problem with my editors so i can fix it?

    i used my cpanel/file editor and/or dreamweaver for all editing.

    my doctype is xhtml 1.0 transitional

  • Is it in a template file or in a post?*
    I’bet it is a post written/edited with wysiwyg. That monster puts that kind of invalid code in the text…

    *check the show source box and hit revalidate – every line# becomes a link…

    i thought i needed to go through one page at a time. i have started with my “header.php” file.

    to date i have only moved my doctype to top of page above php script which eliminated the no doctype error. i have a long way to go.

    i did use the show source option and i “see” the problem but i don’t know how to get to it to edit.

    Well, if you see the problem – you should be able to tell whether it is in post or in template.

    it is my header.php = template file no? the person who wrote it i doubt used a wysiwhg. there is no post content in this file. right?

    Unless seeing it – is difficult to tell, sorry. Guessing is not my forte.

    Also:

    One is worse than the other…
    Plain text editor!

    ok. i was going to get “textwrangler” but it requires OS X v4 and i am on v3.3.9. i need motivation to upgrade and this helps. this will happen next week. no early adoptor here ??

    while i wait for more feedback i am going into style.css to see if i can solve a problem. i will be editing out sections so the site may look like a mess for an hour or so.
