Validate email address?

I want people to be able to submit bids without having to have a registered account. Under this option, users are asked for a name and email address. Ideally, I would like them to submit their real name but choose a display name (like “Joe B.” or “Joe Cool”); their real name would be shown to us but not displayed in the list of bids. More important, we need a valid email address.
Testing my auction page, I was able to submit a bid with a fake email address. Is there a way to validate email addresses as the bids are submitted?
