Using WordPress to allow users to create their own blogs on my website

  • Hello everyone,

    First time poster and newbie to WordPress. I had a quick question about using WordPress in my existing website that is currently being designed by a web design company.

    I am looking to add a feature on the site that will allow me to create my own blog and allow users of the website to create their own blogs as well. I want to keep this aspect on the site itself since I would like their blogs to be linked up with their member profiles on the site.

    Would it be possible to do this with WordPress? To what extent would I be able to customise themes, etc? If it’s not possible with WordPress, which other blogging service could I use? And finally, is it best to use WordPress in this case?

    Or, you can also go further as a social network and even add BuddyPress ( https://buddypress.org/ ), which is pretty cool. I am actually putting together a site for my high school class (since we just had our 10th) and using BuddyPress, which operates off WordPressMU (WPMU)

    Blondishnet, with buddypress can you link blogs to social networking profiles on a site? What other advantages/features does it have?

    Hello again everyone,

    Just would like to see if WordPress works with a web site designed in ASP.NET?

    Also, what other options exist similar to WP (just to have some options to compare)?

    You can link to social network sites… at least from some places I have seen that use BuddyPress. I recommend buying BuddyPress for Dummies (no, it is not an insult, and even I have WordPress for Dummies and Micromedia Flash for Dummies…lol… it is a great investment.)

    The features are that IF you would like your users to be able to have domains instead of subdomains, in BuddyPress you can make it so that their blog within the BuddyPress install (main on) is a domain. However, I do want to point out that your webhost MUST be able to support wildcard domains (*).

    You would also be able to have all of your user to be able to connect in a social networking type community. (like Facebook, MySpace, or even Twitter…and you can install forums like bbpress, another WordPress/Automattic product that will easily integrate into BuddyPress.)

    My suggestion with ASP.net if you want WordPress is to fully convert over.

    Thanks again for the useful comments; I think I need those books definitely!:)

    I have spoken to my web developer and he has responded with the following spiel in regards to integrating Word Press MU with my site:

    “we always use our own coding and programming as we have found that external software tends to be difficult and costly to install, and also tends to be very limited for integrating into our back-end system. To develop the site using one of these software packages will actually work out very costly for you, and will limit the back-end functions available to you.”

    Any truth to those words or just a sales technique?
