I am trying to decide if I should use a wordpress ecommerce plugin or develop my own solution for a basic wholesale web site.

Only wholesalers gain access to the product catalog
    Whole salers create an order.
Web site submits the order to me.
I do not need online payment

Would I be better off creating my own system with custom content types for the product catalog or trying to adapt an existing wordpress ecommerce plug-in for this type of site?

Really it would not matter. It is all about how much time you want to spend to make it your own.

Should take maybe a day or so to make your own little system. I would personally do my own system since I know I could do it in a day and it would be mine

Thanks for the post. My concern with the ecommerce plug-in route is that it might be more complex to “dumb” it down to what I need instead of me building up the basic features from scratch.

Yea any plugin would pretty much be overkill for this feature.. Just create a custom post type and customize it to how you want and call it done.

What did you end up doing? This is exactly what I need for a client.

havent set it up yet, still waiting to hear back for go ahead from the client.
