I would like to find a recent posts plugin that will allow me to put a fairly extensive excerpt of the most recent post onto my front page. Just one, with the excerpt. This would be in addition to the list of recent posts, as the built in ‘recent posts’ widget does. However, none of my posts have an image attached. So I need a way to NOT display the thumbnail that doesn’t leave a goofy generic icon or placeholder. Does this plugin offer that option? Easily accessible without a lot of coding?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

This plugin is built to use thumbnails actually. I wrote another plugin where you can switch the thumbnails off and the customizable excerpts on: Ultimate Post List.

I like the idea. I downloaded your suggested plugin but can’t seem to understand how to make it work. It adds widget to the page I designate, and then says “select list”. What list? How do I create the list?

All I want to do is have a place on the sidebar of my home page that displays the title and an excerpt of the most recent post on my site. The post page is another click for visitor, so this gives them a sample of what I’m about right at the front door, as it were. If this plugin will do that, please help this hopelessly inept person figure out how to do it and I’ll be eternally grateful.

Create a list in (left navigation) “Ultimate Post List” > “Add List”, control all the desired options and publish the list. Select the published list in the widget and save the setting. Then you can see the list.

But I found an easier way: Use “Recent Posts Widget With Thumbnails” again and deactivate both the checkboxes “Show thumbnail?” and “Show default thumbnail”. Does that work for you?

Oh, that is so very nice! It does exactly what I wanted. Thank you ever so much!
