As we all know, using short URL’s for links on social media is a good thing and that using custom ones is even better.

Currently, I use a mix of Bit.ly and Hootsuite. Hootsuite to schedule posts and Bit.ly so I can use my Branded Short Domain. Is there a way of having Jetpack’s Publicize use my short domain in links instead of my sites full URL?

For example, my site is at https://www.insidegamer.net but my short URL is https://ohh.fyi. If I use Publicize it uses the full domain.

I don’t want to pay $50 per month to Hootsuite to use short URL’s so right now I’m using Bit.ly to generate the URL and Hootsuite to post. Ideally, I’d just have Publicize handle everything on my behalf.

If you use the WP Bitly plugin, your site’s shortlinks will all be replaced by Bitly links. That will include links posted on Social Networks via Publicize.

    I hope this helps!

Did exactly what I was after although ran into a weird issue with WP Bitly.

I made one post and then within minutes I was notified by Bit.ly I had used half of the 500 branded URL’s for the month. Looking on Bit.ly from one link I created it was going up by a usage of 10 per second even though I wasn’t using it.

I disabled the plugin and it stopped using my branded link quota.

    Not sure what happened.

Oh, that doesn’t sound good. Do you use another plugin to generate Bitly URLs from your posts? Is it possible that the 2 plugins conflicted with each other?

It might also be worth checking the plugin’s options. Maybe it tried to create Bitly URLs for each one of your posts as soon as you activated it?

You can also contact the plugin authors via their support forums:

Nope, I usually manually create short URL’s through the Bit.ly website.

You could be onto something with it generating links for all existing posts though. Will dig deeper and get debug logs and reach out to the authors.

Thanks for the lead and the tips.
