• I volunteered to create a website for my town’s 375th anniversary – wayland375.com. I looked at a lot of options for calendars. I wanted something that logged-in contributors could use and that had a polished look.

I had always used embedded Google calendars but was nervous about allowing contributors the access they would need to update it. Plus the Google Calendar UI doesn’t provide a standard way of entering the event details.

I like Time.ly Event plugin because of the nice look and feel, you get quite a lot in the free version. And the Pro version has a button on the calendar for logged in contributors to easily add an event from the front end.

I like the flexibility of Calendar views available in Time.ly. When the town’s anniversary year was starting, we only had a few events so we used Posterboard view instead of the calendar. It gave us a nice look to the Calendar page.

The event page layout is also very nice and professional looking. It gives all the details of the event in a well organized way.

We like the inclusion of a Google map thumbnail as an option. We also have used the Buy Tickets link. The button is ‘smart’ and hides if you don’t enter a url.

We are on shared hosting so we minimized the number of other plugins since the event calendar is very important to us.

The developers have been very helpful and responsive.

Overall, I am very happy and the Town committee and community like the looks of the website, most of which I attribute to the Time.ly calendar.

  • I just left a bad review on here so came to check out the good reviews to see how something can be good for one and bad for another, because you supplied a link I checked out your site and can see the issues instantly it took about 30 seconds for your homepage to load then when browsing its hangs here and there. I can guarantee you, if you disable this plugin that will stop, its only a matter of time you will see what I have.

Nancy, I looked at your site and like what I see. Is wayland375.com still using Timely? I noticed that videogeek seemed to think you would have problems four months ago…how is it going. I am looking to upgrade the calendar experience for a local boy scout troop and this seems to have what I need.

Rjh144 – We disabled Timely. I was very sorry to do it. The only reason was that we are on shared hosting with Hostgator. There was a slow-down at the time when they were moving to new servers. It caused problems with the plugin loading. I went back to embedding a Google Calendar.

The Timely plugin was very good – I was emailing the creator and he seemed very helpful. I would use it if I had more robust hosting. I would suggest you test it. If you have a simple setup with few plugins, it may work for you. I was pushing it with lots of plugins, including Slidedeck, another slideshow plugin I love, but which needs good band-with to operate, at least in my experience.

Keep me posted, I would love to hear how you fare with it. – Nancy (millbrookcreative.com)
