• Hi; seriously newbie question. Can I add a site developed on another platform to a new site developed on WordPress? A little background: I have a site (never uploaded, previously shared on memory sticks) developed by an app called SecondSite. This app is dedicated to developing sites using content from a single purpose relational database called The Master Genealogist. My goal is to have a private website for sharing with family (scattered globally) in-depth family tree data and analyses. The site will be hosted through my local ISP. Second Site is an older app with somewhat dated graphics. I am hoping I can marry the Second Site product (stripped of all unnecessary graphics) with a new site developed using WordPress. The WordPress site would be my ‘face’ to the world where I would add related (and perhaps unrelated) content. The genealogy/family tree data is of course the primary reason for a site.
So the question becomes; can I add my SecondSite site to a WordPress site that I will develop and would I do so using a subdomain or are there better ways?
Thanks for any help you can offer

  • Basically, it is absolutely up to you what you deposit on which subdomain of your domain. This can be completely different techniques that are used in each case. To “connect” them you can simply set appropriate links so that the visitors of the pages find the other. There is no other data exchange between the pages. To achieve the above you don’t even need WordPress as CMS for your main website as the above can be done in many ways.

Of course it would also be possible to create some kind of connection between WordPress and SecondSite. You would have to define for yourself what kind of connection that should be. As already described, this does not matter for a simple link. If you want to implement a certain kind of connection (e.g. a data exchange or import), you would first have to check if both software packages involved allow it. WordPress offers a lot of possibilities for this. Since you are asking here in the WordPress forum, it is unfortunately not possible to tell you whether the second software you have chosen, called SecondSite, supports such a data exchange in any form. You would have to contact its developer. Depending on the feedback from SecondSite you could then develop a concrete plan.

As I said, a simple linking would be much easier.
