using localhost for testing

  • Dear Support,

    I am trying to learn WordPress.

    I have a site at, nynaturalfaceliftmassage. It is a linux hosted site. I access that site via, wp-admin and then logon remotely.

    Locally, I have a virtual machine and I installed WordPress on it. I access it via, localhost/wp-admin/.

    I am trying to play with WordPress locally so that I can test things locally and not ruin the live site.

    But, I am confused on how to backup the real site and then import/restore the site locally.

    I have already ftp’d the remote site and have a copy of it locally.

    But, don’t know what to do next. How can I import/restore the live site on to my test system?

  • Strongly suggest that you use the plugin DUPLICATOR on your live site to manage all the “moving WordPress” issues, like changing all the URLs in your database.
    Basically:
    – the files you have downloaded are fine, you will only need to change the file “wp-config.php”
    – You will need a copy of the database from your live site with adjustments of the URLs, DUPLICATOR will do this.

    thank you. will attempt with Duplicator. Duplicator looks a bit complex especially with the database bit, at the moment I can’t import the database so will have to look at the item that “failed”. thanks again.

    Hi, if you can’t do it with Duplicator try it manually, by exporting your database via Phpmyadmin in your server.

    Yes duplicator can look intimidating, it has lots of flexibility and options. I say “Don’t be intimidated”, have a clear idea of what you want to do, read the instructions and understand what terminology they use and how it relates to your needs. Then proceed step by step.
