    Some details:-

    – Wants to change hosting companies
    – Wants to retain domain name
    – Wants fresh install of WordPress on new hosting
    – Wants to retain posts/images/comments
    – Does not want to mess with databases.

This is what I plan to do:-

    – Apply for new hosting (transferring my existing domain to them)
    – Wait for nameservers to resolve
    – Fresh install of WordPress (via Fantastico/Simplescripts/Independent) on new hosting
    – Use EXPORT tool from old wordpress
    – Updating permalinks on new hosting
    – Use IMPORT tool in new wordpress
Transfer via FTP images from wp_content/uploads
    – Upload/Transfer current theme to new hosting
    – Install new plugins to new hosting
    – If necessary, meddle with .htaccess on new hosting

Basically on both old and new hosting, it will be the same –

    domain.com/blog

    ^ Are my steps ok?
^ Do I still need to meddle with databases?
^ Will my pictures still show on my blog?

    One thing to consider…

    – Wait for nameservers to resolve

    – Use EXPORT tool from old wordpress

the dns changes are going to prevent you from loading your blog at old location.

you *can* get around that, but its unecessary, since you can do the export before the new dns has propagated.

Hi whooami, thanks for your quick reply…

Ok so I should do the export first and then allow the DNS nameservers to propagate?

i would. whats the difference except that you dont have to muck around with stuff to get to the old site?

^ I dunno. I added the propagating nameservers just to make sure I don’t make a step but you make a lot more sense. So I won’t need to muck around with my databases right? Transferring my images via FTP is ok?

What I Plan to Do Now:-

    – Clean up existing Blog
    – Use EXPORT tool from old wordpress
    – Apply for new hosting (transferring my existing domain to them)
    Propagate DNS nameservers
    – Fresh install of WordPress (via Fantastico/Simplescripts/Independent) on new hosting
    – Adjust permalinks on new hosting
    – Use IMPORT tool in new wordpress
Transfer via FTP images from wp_content/uploads
    – Upload/Transfer current theme to new hosting
    – Install new plugins to new hosting
    – If necessary, meddle with .htaccess on new hosting

    Is that better?

^^ So the above worked successfully. I was able to import my posts into my new wordpress and also my pictures.

However, I noticed that the posts/links that I had deleted before the move are still evident and are still being found by Google/Yahoo. How do I get rid of this problem?

Just check whether the source link of the images after import point to the new site or not.

I am doing the same thing – domain and url will remain the same, but hosting is changing, and I want a fresh install but want to keep my posts/images/comments/etc. However, I can’t use WP’s import feature, because my XML file is too big. What do I do? I really don’t want to have to mess with databases.

Well, you’re going to have to mess with the database if you’re not going to use the import feature…no other way to get the content to your new host.

See the videos at the following link. The only exception for you since you are using the same web address is that you don’t have to edit the sql file to change the address.

    Great tutorial. Thanks.

You’re welcome….hope it helped you get things transferred.
