I’ve been using WP for decades, but I’m suddenly stuck trying to post images from my Android phone, with images stored in Google Photos. I’ve always used my desktop computer in the past, and pulled images from the local file system, but at the moment I’m stuck with only my Android smartphone and Google Photos. I have successfully associated my Google Photos account to my WP (self-hosted) account, and I can browse through my GP photos, but whenever I choose a photo, it puts a greyed-out version of the image in the post, then eventually times out and places a blank placeholder in the post.

I eventually discovered that if I resize the image in GP first, then the attempt succeeds (suggesting a size limitation), but I would like to be able to have this step done automatically – I’ve set my default image size to approx 1920×1020, so it would make sense that all uploaded images are resized to that target size. All my photos in GP are rather large, as is typical for any modern smartphone (typically 4000×3000 pixels).

I then tried using the Android App to post images. This attempt succeeded, but – it will only pull from the device (phone) repository and not the GP repository. Plus – once posted (which worked, as I can see the post live on the web) I cannot really ‘edit’ the post using the app – it pulls up just the text content, with placeholder-spaces where the images should be (even when I choose a resized, small photo).

Finally – while I successfully associated my GP account to my self-hosted WP site login account, I cannot see where I can modify or remove this association within the WP dashboard.

EDIT TO ADD – following on from the last paragraph, I got temporary access to a desktop computer and accessed my site from there. But I was NOT able to access / link to my GP account; I can only insert images from the gallery or from the ‘device’ (which is the desktop computer). So I’m really unclear as to how exactly I was able to access GP from my smartphone; the link ought to be universally available.

If you had WordPress hooked up to your Google Photos account, it might have been through the Jetpack plugin: https://jetpack.com/support/using-your-google-photos-with-jetpack/

I looked at the Jetpack plugin (app, on Android) and it looked like it wanted to fully take over / replace the WP app, so I declined.

So the jetpack plug-in adds functionality to the site, and is that functionality available then from both a browser (desktop) and from my Android phone? Do I need to install the android app to take advantage of the plugin features, or are they independent?

Does anyone know how I’m CURRENTLY able to view my GP content on my phone, but not access it when on a desktop? Since I’m on the phone that took the photos, it’s a bit confusing because I can access my photos directly on the ‘device’, but – I can also view ‘Albums’ created within GP, so I’m pretty sure it’s pulling from GP and not the local device (DCIM).

WordPress does not tie into a Google Photos account by itself, that functionality is not built-in.

That functionality is added by plugins, like Jetpack.

If what you had used looks like the screenshots from the Jetpack support article I originally shared, that’s what you were using.

Keep in mind also that connecting with a Google Photos account is not the same as just accessing the photo library in your Android phone.

ok, I’ll install the jetpack plugin and try that. Can you explain how the jetpack plugin relates to the jetpack android app?

I understand that on a Desktop browser, I only have access to the plugin but on my android phone I will have access to the plugin AND the app, so how do they relate?

If I don’t install/use the android app, will I be limited in what I can do?

The Jetpack app is like the WordPress app, but it adds functionality provided by the Jetpack plugin.

The Jetpack app is not required for using the Jetpack plugin, but the Jetpack plugin is required for using the Jetpack app.

i just installed the jetpack plugin. It offers many things in settings but I cannot find anything remotely associated with linking my Google photos account. I looked in media, composing, writing etc. Can you give me a pointer? All I want to do is be able to pull an image from GP when composing a post. Thanks!

UPDATE – I found nothing in settings, but when I went to post an image I did see an option for ‘cloud media app’ and that then allowed me to choose my Google photos account. I can now choose an image from Google photos, but the upload times out and gives me a JSON error. However … If I return to the post, the image is there. So it looks like I’m finally able to post images from Google photos.

I would note that Even before installing jetpack, I was able to choose images from google photos albums, which logically means the link to Google photos was there, somehow… But I guess that will have to remain a mystery until I get home and in front of the decent computer again

I’m now on a desktop computer again, in Chrome browser. I’m trying to create a post with images. If I choose ‘image’, I have the options ‘upload’, ‘media library’, and ‘insert from URL’ (nothing new here). Upload only looks at the local file system. Media library just looks at already uploaded files. ‘URL’ just lets me paste a URL. So nothing to do with Google Photos. In the upper right corner, I see a ‘jetpack’ symbol. This offers me two options, ‘social previews’ and ‘likes and sharing’. The former offers to preview how things will look on social media, the latter offers “Activate the Sharing feature to allow others to share your posts.” Still nothing related to pulling images from my GP account. So I’m still basically stuck.

EDIT – Reading this site – https://jetpack.com/support/why-the-wordpress-com-connection-is-important-for-jetpack/ – suggests I do need a WP.com account even if I’m self-hosted, but – it gives a long list of features that do and do not work with / without the WP.com account. NEITHER list mentions a link to google photos, specifically, that I can see – so I’m not sure whether I need a WP.com account or not. All I want to do it have the ability to create a post and pull an image from my Google Photos account …
