Using cron, scheduled backup never finishes

    Hello.

    I have define('DISABLE_WP_CRON', true); in wp-config.php,

    but then I defined in Cpanel an every-5-min cron job with a command php -q /home/<my-user-name>/public_html/wordpress/wp-cron.php. Is this, by the way, a right way to allow UpdraftPlus’s scheduled backups?

    The “Backup Now” works just fine, but the scheduled backups never complete. Here is the log from yesterday, can you take a look? (I removed references to the site/server name).

    Hi,

    The log suggests that the MySQL server is dropping data at the time of the scheduled backup. Is it a time of heavy server load on the MySQL server or webserver? I’d recommend re-scheduling it to a different time – which, in the free version of UD, you can do by changing the schedule to something else, saving settings, and then changing it back again.

    If my suspicion of a 60 sec cutoff on cron jobs is true, what can be done about that?

    To remind, I have the following:

    “define('DISABLE_WP_CRON', true);” in wp-config.php,

    and in the Cpanel, I set an every-10-min Cron job with a command
    “php -q /home/<my-user-name>/public_html/wordpress/wp-cron.php“.

    Hi,

    David, I have a suspicion that my host’s Cron jobs are interrupted after 60 sec!

    That’s not a problem – it’s very normal for shared web hosting setups to have a maximum execution time. UpdraftPlus is written to assume that processes can get randomly killed, and to be able to resume.

    60 seconds is on the low side – with a higher limit, the backup would go faster, but it won’t affect final success directly.

    I set an every-10-min Cron job

    Go for more often than this. You’ve probably got a large back-log of cron jobs. (Use the free plugin ‘WP Crontrol’ to find out). Clearing 1 only every 10 minutes, and where that job may result in a new job being scheduled as well (e.g. with UpdraftPlus, where it schedules a resumption in case it gets killed), could well lead to a list of jobs that grows rather than shrinks.

    David, I found the root cause! It was not the every-10-min vs. every-minute Cron job. It was the wrong cron command

    php -q /home/my-user-name/public_html/wordpress/wp-cron.php >/dev/null 2>&1

    With the above cron command, the short-running wp-cron jobs (not related to the UpdraftPlus) worked, but the long UpdraftPlus job was interrupted at 60th second and couldn’t even resume when called the next time.

    Once I changed the cron command to

    cd /home/my-user-name/public_html/wordpress && php -q wp-cron.php >/dev/null 2>&1

    the UpdraftPlus scheduled backups magically started working! No interruption at 60th sec.

    B.t.w. I verified two alternative cron commands:

    curl -s https://my-domain-name.com/wordpress/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron > /dev/null 2>&1

    and

    wget -q -O – https://my-domain-name.com/wordpress/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron >/dev/null 2>&1

    I wonder, do you have an opinion on which of the three above cron commands is preferable: cd && php, curl, or wget?

    My host admin said the same, “php is preferable to curl/wget”.

    However, somebody here at WP forums says “run curl https://example.com/wp-cron.php is how you’re supposed to” (see here).

    Also, using the cd && php approach I occasionally (not every time) still get backup failures! Like this:
