• Is it possible to use the “Comment Blacklist” (Options -> Discussion) to block attempted comments from specific IP addresses? All comments for my site are moderated in any case, but there is a persistent spammer (who seems to use the same IP address) whose attempted comments I’d like to have removed on sight, without requiring user interaction. Does the “Comment Blacklist” match on the posting IP address (and other comment metadata), or only on the text of the actual comment?

I believe you can just insert the IP address there and yes, that will block that IP from commenting.

A somewhat better solution would be to use spam-blocking plugins, like Bad Behavior, Spam Karma, and Akismet.

Hello. I’m using WP 2.1.3, and I seem to have the same issue as david72. I have a persistent spammer coming from the same IP range all the time. Akismet DOES catch them (yay!), but when I add the range, individually as x.x.x.1 through x.x.x.255, his posts still get through to the Akismet blocker. Is this because Akismet’s code hits comments prior to the “Comment Blacklist” function? I would much prefer the processing happens on my own site as far as preliminary blocking vice Akismet… so as to alleviate the problem myself prior to dumping the unnecessary traffic on Akismet.

No big deal for me personally, since the spam is blocked… just wondering 1) if my wordpress install is functioning correctly, and 2) if I can block the post prior to dumping it off on Akismet – I imagine their processors would thank me, even if no one else did ??
