Using both a lightbox and slideshow within the same post/site

Apologies if this has already been covered but I have searched and not found anything that quite resolves my problem …

I have “open image in a lightbox” activated under appearance because that’s how I want photos to appear when individual images are clicked on; but when those images which are set up as a gallery and therefore open as a slideshow (which is also how I want them to) the opened lightbox image is in the background and it looks a bit messy. Is there anyway to correct this? I know I can de-activate the lightbox but I don’t like the way the image then opens …

I have given up on the Jetpack carousel as I can’t get it too function and there seems to be too many people not solving the same issue. I have been searching for a plug in solution that displays images within a blog post well (I frequently attach several images to a post) but have been baffled into submission! So any recommendations welcome … I don’t mind paying for a plug in but my techinal ability is close to zero so that needs to be factored in!
