• I downloaded Word Press (for the first time!) to hosted accounts with GoDaddy and Just Host a few days before the release of 3.1 (which I didn’t know was coming).

It was very easy to install WP through both hosts, but the problem is, their automatic installers are not updated to 3.1 yet, and they are unable to tell me exactly when that will take place. (They don’t seem in a big hurry!). Of course, since I am just starting to build out these sites, I would like to hit the ground running with the latest version.

Tech support at both companies told me I would have to delete WP and then manually reinstall it from the wp.org site if I want 3.1 now.

But when I logged into the 3.0.5 WP dashboard (with both hosts) it gave me the option of “upgrading” with a button click. I did that, and got the thumbs up that the upgrade was successful. The thing is, the upgrade occurred so swiftly, I found it hard to believe anything had really happened. And when I check via the hosts cPanels, it still says the 3.0.5 version is installed.

If anyone has any experience upgrading through either GoDaddy or Fanstastico and can shed some insight — or knows of a way I can definitively check through the Dashboard, I would appreciate hearing about it.

The Dashboard was indicating status “No further updates available” or something like that, after the upgrade. Prior to, it was urging me to to upgrade. I really don’t want to start inputting data and then have to deal with an upgrade shortly thereafter.

Thank you for taking time to read this and respond!

I am using the Linux installations of WP, if that makes any difference.

Been there, done that. Fantastico falsely reports the version of WordPress (and other software you install with it) if you don’t do the upgrade with Fantastico.

Yes, the automatic upgrade you did really does happen “that quick”. I just completed about 10 upgrades and they all went “that quick”.

In the (Admin) Dashboard, you should see the following statement:
“You are using WordPress 3.1.” towards the upper left corner of the screen. Not far from the Change Theme button.

Thank you so much for the speedy response. I am able to now notice the 3.1 you pointed out. Much less stressed about proceeding!
