Using an external database of info or data entry question.

I need to create quite a big library. For example I want to have a catalog of cars. Do I make a post for every model that a manufacturer makes one at a time? I guess each post would have tags/categories for the make/model. Or can I create a database and query this through a search? Can someone suggest to me the right approach?
