Uses and Differences of Post Meta Box and Custom Fields

  • When adding custom meta data to a WordPress theme is it better to use a Post Meta Box or Custom Field? Do I need both? Is there a difference other than Post Meta Box has more flexibility in what type of fields it can deploy? I am having a hard time understanding the difference between Post Meta Boxes and Custom Fields and why one would be used over the other.

    What it seems like.

    Post Meta Box – can add any type of saveable data or field grouped or singular. Can post this extra data to the front page. Also, has the ability to add a moveable box to the UI of the administrative panel.

    Custom Field – can add a single custom text only field to a post. Can post this extra data to the front page. Can only be grouped by a custom meta box.

    Why use custom fields at all if the custom meta box can basically add any type of text or field and a custom UI box?

    Meta box is a box that exists in the admin interface which the admin could change a post meta data through and it’s made by the wordpress theme developer
    for example : meta box in the admin interface to make posting a gallery photos easy
